OPOS Vs Win-EZ Printing

OPOS is an industry standard of communication layer between a POS application, and POS Hardware (In this case printers) . Win-EZ Printing on the other hand, is a piece of software that is written by Hospitality Data Systems Inc. to manage and communicate with the POS Hardware (through the OPOS interface), and the Win-EZ POS software.

OPOS's Primary tasks

OPOS serves as a generic link between the software and hardware from multiple vendors. It handles the decoding and interpreting of the information it receives from the software, and passes that information to the Printer. It also passes information back to the software so that it knows the status of each printer (Out of paper, turned off, errors etc.)

Each printer attached to the system is assigned a Logical Device Name. this "Name" is then used for all communication with the printer.

Each hardware manufacturer provides a software utility for setting up their particular brand of hardware.  This utility allows you to set up the IP Address, Model, and Logical Device Name for each printer , and then stores all of the information on the computer so that Win-EZ Printing is able to communicate with the printer.

Win-EZ Printing's Primary tasks

Win-EZ printing is the software that takes all of the information that the POS software gives it, formats it, and sends it to the printer. It also manages the status of the printers and keeps the POS software informed. The Win-EZ Printing software runs on a Windows XP station on the network. It can take requests from a copy of Win-EZ POS running anywhere in the network.
