    Conner Tape Backup Utility QBACKUP.EXE

    Last edited: December 15, 2003 08:15 AM

QBackup is a utility to save and restore from a hard disk.  It installs into a directory of the same name.  Preprogrammed setups can be created and QBackup can select and run these setups directly from the command line.
    Syntax

            QBACKUP (setup file) (/A)

/A – run backup automatically with no user prompts.
    Backup Sets

FULL – This set backs up the entire hard drive to include system and hidden files.  It overwrites old backups on the tape so that tapes can be used over without reformatting.  This also means that there will only be on backup per tape.

DAILY- This set backs up all files in the TOUCHNET directory or any of its subdirectories that have been changed since the last FULL backup.  It appends to old backups on the tape, as the backups are small enough that many can fit on a single tape.
    Backup Procedure

Monthly,(or more often if desired) a full backup should be run. Label two tapes FULL – Odd months and FULL – Even months, and use them alternately as appropriate.  Run a daily backup every day.  For this a single tape can be used until full.  Multiple tapes can be used for daily but this may cause confusion when trying to identify the correct tape to restore.

The Choose menu has an option called Tape Backup with two suboptions called Daily and Full.  These options should be used if possible as the server can still be up and running while the backup is taking place.

On some systems there may not be enough base memory to run Qbackup and Server simultaneously.  For these customers, both backups can be run from the multiple boot menu that comes up when the MCU is rebooted. The network will be down when these options are selected but the MCU will automatically reboot and come up as a server when the backup is complete.
    Restoring a FULL Backup

      1. Place the tape containing the most recent full backup in the tape drive.
      2. At the DOS prompt type:
                  CDQBACKUP
                  QBACKUP FULL
      3. Select Restore.
      4. To insure that the correct catalog is used, pull down Catalog from the menu and select Retrieve.
      5. There should only be one Catalog listed and it will be already highlighted.  Select Start Retrieve.
      6. Select Restore Files, then select the line that says None [-C-]. The line should change to say Some or All [-C-] and the files selected should now show the number of files at the bottom of the screen.
      7. Select Start Restore.
      8. When the Restore is done an information window will pop up. Select OK, then select Quit and you will be back at DOS.

    Restoring a DAILY Backup

      1. Place the tape containing the most recent daily backup in the tape drive.
      2. At the DOS prompt type:
                  CDQBACKUP
                  QBACKUP DAILY
      3. Select Restore.
      4. To insure that the correct catalog is used, pull down Catalog from the menu and select Retrieve.
      5. Highlight the correct catalog(it will probably be the last one on the list) and select Start Retrieve.

    Restoring selected files

If the file resides in a DAILY backup use the steps listed for DAILY with the exception of step 6 as noted below.  If the file resides in a FULL backup use the steps listed for FULL with the exception of step 6 as noted below.  If not sure where, try DAILY first and then FULL.

In place of step 6 perform the following:

      1. Choose Select Files
      2. Move the highlight to the directory containing the file at the left.
      3. a)The file should now be listed on the right.  Select the file by highlighting it and then right clicking with a mouse or pressing the spacebar.
b)Alternatively, the entire directory can be selected by leaving the highlight on the directory name on the left and then right clicking with a mouse or pressing the spacebar.
      4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as needed for additional files.
      5. Select OK and finish the Restore using steps 7 and 8 as listed previously.
