    Epson Thermal Printer TM-T88II

    Last edited: December 15, 2003 08:08 AM

    The TM-T88II is a 40 column thermal printer with the ability to print a graphic image, such as a customer logo. It is ideal where quality guestcheck printing is needed. See the TMFLogo document for information on creating and downloading graphics.
    Dip Switches

    There are two banks of dip switches accessible by removing a cover plate on the bottom of the printer. Switch 7 on bank 1 is set to On. All other switches on both banks are set to Off. This is the factory default.
    Lights

        *      Power – Always On, if printer is turned on and receiving power.
        *      Error – Normally Off. If On solid, then the top cover is open. If Flashing, then an internal error condition has occurred. There are several different patterns of flashing lights to aid a repairman in fixing the problem, but none of the causes are user repairable.
        *      Paper Out – Normally Off. When the paper is low, this light will come on but the printer will continue to print. When the paper is out, this light will stay on, but the printer will stop printing. If running a self-test, this light will flash.

    Paper

    To load the paper, open the cover by pushing the large release button located on the top right side of the printer. There is no paper path to thread. Simply make sure the end of the paper extends far enough to exit the printer, and close the lid. The paper roll should be oriented so the paper curls to the back as it comes out of the printer.
    Cash Drawers

    The TM-T88II can drive up to two cash drawers through an RJ11 port labeled DK located on the back of the printer. The TM-T88II requires cash drawers equipped with 24V solenoids. Do not use 12V drawers typically supplied for Star printers.
    Cables

    For serial printers, a female DB25 connector is provided. Cabling is the same as for Star printers.
    Styling

    GENERAL CODES:

        *      Open CD1 – 27,112,0,99,100
        *      Open CD2 – 27,112,1,99,100

    LOGO RELATED CODES:

        *      Left Justify Logo – 27,97,0 (Default)
        *      Center Logo – 27,97,1
        *      Right Justify Logo – 27,97,2
        *      Print Logo Normal – 28,112,1,0 (Default)

        *      Print Logo Double Width & Heighth – 28,112,1,3

          NOTE: To center a logo on a print template:
            1. Issue the Center Logo codes
            2. Print the Logo
            3. Issue the Left Justify Logo codes.  Otherwise the printer remains in Center Text mode.

    BAR CODE RELATED CODES:

        There are several different types of bar code systems and not much is known about most of them.

        Bar code System: CODE93

            Initialize printer 27,64
            Standard mode 27,83
            Bar code command 29,107,72,#
            (# is the number of bytes of data to follow that will be converted to bar code data) This set of codes is are the only codes in this table specific to CODE 93 bar code system.  The other codes are general codes for the printer.
            Data ##,##,##,##
            (send the number of bytes specified in the Bar code command above)
            Line feed 12,10

            NOTE: There are several other ASCII codes related to this bar code system, however they were not deemed necessary to document.  For complete documentation of this bar code system and others as they relate to the Espon TM-T88II, refer to the hardware manual.

            This code system has successfully been used in conjunction with Touch Menus Barcoder utility and a MetroLogic Orbit 7100 bar code scanner.  It was used to print the check number on the guest receipt and recall the check by scanning it.

            To print a bar code of the check number, make a print template with the following instructions:
            TEXT ASCII:27,64
            (initialize the print buffer)
            TEXT ASCII:27,83
            (set the printer in standard mode)
            TEXT ASCII:29,107,72,4
            (tell the printer to make a bar code using bar code system CODE 93 with the next 4 bytes of data)
            TEXT ####
            (the variable Check Number)
            TEXT ASCII:12,10
            (print the bar code and line feed)

            To use this with a guest check:

              1. Do the guest check template
              2. Do the Bar code template. (Make the Bar code template Append to Previous)
              3. Print to the desired printer(s).

    After a normal power up, the Power light should be on, and all other lights should be off. If the printer does not operate or has malfunctioned, check the following items:

        *      Self Test

        Turn the power OFF. Next, hold down FEED while turning the printer power ON. This will generate the first part of the self test containing internal information about the printer, and then leave the Paper Out light flashing. Press FEED again and an alphanumeric pattern will print for about five more seconds.

        *      No Power

        The TM-T88II uses a 24V power adapter model PS-170. This in turn should be plugged firmly into the power connector in the back of the printer. The power switch is located on the front of the printer.

        *      Paper Out Light On

        If the printer is not printing, then the printer is out of paper. This light will come on when the paper is low, but the printer will continue to print.

        *      Error Light On Solid

        The lid is not latched solidly shut. Push down firmly on the lid.

        *      Error Light Flashing

        A hardware error has occured. If the problem can’t be corrected by turning the computer off and back on, then the printer needs to be replaced.
