LANtastic 8.0 is a 32 bit version designed to be run on a Win95 of Win98 system. It is fully compatible with version 7, and can be configured to run as either a server or a workstation.
InstallationTo install LANtastic, you will need the LANtastic CDROM, and the registration card containing the Serial Number and Verification Key.
1. Put the CDROM in the the CDROM drive.
2. The CDROM will automatically start.
3. Choose the operating system that you will be using and click install.
4. At the Welcome screen click on Next.
5. At the LANtastic License Agreement screen click on Agree.
6. At the LANtastic License Verification screen enter the Serial Number and Verification Key from the Registration Card, then click on Next.
7. At the LANtastic Setup Options screen enter the computer name for this station, and leave the ‘Share this …’ box checked. If this is to be the main server, make the computer name MAIN, otherwise OFFICE is recommended. Then click on Next.
8. At the Modem Sharing Options screen leave the ‘Share a Modem’ box unchecked and click on Next.
9. At the Winsock Gateway Options screen leave the ‘Install …’ box unchecked and click on Next.
10. At the LANtastic Setup Options screen leave the ‘Allow Setup….’ box unchecked and click on Next.
11. At the Summary screen click on Finish.
12. Feed disks to the computer as needed. The computer usually gets full after about three disks, so don’t worry that it didn’t take them all.
13. When it says ‘LANtastic 8.0 Setup Complete’, click on Restart.Configuration
There are some network settings that need to be tweaked to make sure that LANtastic will run the show and not the network protocols that came with Win95. See Networking in the Configuring Win95 Systems document for details.
If this is going to be an office workstation, you will need to set up a redirection to make MAIN’s C-Drive the N: drive locally. See Remapping a Network Drive in the Configuring Win95 Systems document for details.
If this is going to be a server, see the Windows 95 File Server Setup document for complete setup instructions.
Using With DOS
1. Removing internal share. This will result in freeing up some conventional memory. DO NOT remove internal share if the unit is being used as a file server. File servers always require an internal share.
Instructions:
A. From your c:> prompt go into Net Manager (C:>net_mgr).
B. Go into Server Start-Up Parameters.
C. Scroll all the way down to Internal Share: Select to manage.
D. Press enter to disable Internal Share Support.
E. Hit escape to exit internal share.
F. Once you do this you’ll see in the in Approximate Memory Usage
that the bytes in internal share are significantly reduced.
G. Exit out of LANtastic and reboot your computer.
