    Windows Configuration Information

    Last edited: December 15, 2003 08:20 AM

This document represents a collection of information for setting up and configuring a Windows95 or Windows98 office system. Since the installation process is highly specific to the particular hardware and many systems come with Windows preloaded, installation will not be detailed here.
    CONFIG.SYS

    DEVICE=C:WINDOWSHIMEM.SYS
    DOS=HIGH
    FILES=60
    AUTOEXEC.BAT

    @ECHO OFF
    PROMPT $p$g
    PATH C:WINDOWS;C:WINDOWSCOMMAND;N:TOUCHNET;N:TOOLS;N:UTILITY;N:PLUGINS
SET SHOWMOUSE=YES                  ;Required only if running TOUCHNET
SUBST Z: C:RAMDRIVE                ;Required only if running TOUCHNET
    Networking

See Lantastic 8 Network Software for details on installing Lantastic. After installation, it is necessary to remove any other clients, protocols, or drivers that may already exist. It is also necessary to make the Lantastic NetBIOS the primary protocol for the HASP identification to work properly. To do so, follow these steps:

      1.

Right click on the Network Neighborhood icon.
      2.

          Click on Properties.
      3.

In the Configurations center there should be three line items:

            *

              Client for Lantastic Networks
            *

NE2000 Compatible (may differ depending on adapter card used)
            *

              Artisoft Lantastic NetBIOS

      4.

Delete any other line items listed here by highlighting the item, then clicking on Remove. The only exception would be if you are also connecting to another network, in which case you may need to retain additional clients, protocols, or drivers. If other protocols are left in, be sure not to bind them to Client for Lantastic Networks.
      5.

Highlight Artisoft Lantastic NetBIOS and click on Properties.
      6.

          Click on the Advanced tab.
      7.

Click on Set this protocol to be the default protocol.
      8.

Click on OK as needed to accept all changes. You may need to shut down and restart Windows for these changes to take effect.

    Display

Be aware that many of the options to enhance the display can have a detrimental effect on system performance. Increasing graphic resolution will slow system speed. Wallpaper and screen savers can interfere with communications programs such as Co-Sessions.

It is also important that the correct video adapter driver be installed. An incorrect driver can cause system crashes or spontaneous rebooting of the computer when screen redraws are occurring.
    Office Printers

A printer driver must be installed for any programs which print reports. If the printer is installed on other than LPT1, Report Options in Manager must be changed to specify the new port. To install a driver:

      1.

          Click on Start.
      2.

          Click on Settings.
      3.

          Click on Printers.
      4.

          Double click on Add Printers.
      5.

          Click on Next.
      6.

Click on Local Printer and click on Next.
      7.

Select the Manufacturer, then the Model, and click on Next.
      8.

Select LPT1, and click on Next.
      9.

If this printer will be the primary printer for your Windows programs also, click on Yes, and click on Next.
      10.

Windows will load the files needed for this printer. If a floppy is needed, the user will be prompted.

    Shared Global Printers

A Generic/Text printer driver must be installed for each global printer to be driven by this computer. To install a driver:

      1.

          Click on Start.
      2.

          Click on Settings.
      3.

          Click on Printers.
      4.

          Double click on Add Printers.
      5.

          Click on Next.
      6.

Click on Local Printer and click on Next.
      7.

For Manufacturer, select Generic and click on Next.
      8.

Select the port the printer is physically connected to.
      9.

If this is a serial printer (COM1, COM2, etc), select Configure Port.  For Flow Control, select Hardware and click OK.
      10.

          Click on Next.
      11.

For the printer name enter the Touchnet name.
      12.

Click on Finish.  Windows will load the files needed for this printer.
      13.

Right click on the newly created icon and select Lantastic Sharing.
      14.

          Click on Share.
      15.

Type in the Touchnet name, leaving the @ sign in front.  You may leave the description blank.
      16.

          Click on Create.
      17.

Close all windows.  You are done.

    Remapping a Network Drive

If Windows cannot establish contact with a network drive, the window that pops up gives the user the option of whether to attempt the connection the next time the computer is booted. This is unfortunate, for if the user selects No, the network drive will be inaccessible until it is remapped again by the user. The steps to remap it are:

    1. Double click on Network Neighborhood, then double click on Main.

    2. Right click on c-drive, then click on Map Network Drive.

    3. Pull down the Drive menu and select N:, click on the Reconnect at logon box, then click on OK.

    4. A window will pop open showing the drive contents. Close the window and the drive is now remapped.
    Creating an Icon

    1. Right click on the desktop where you want the icon to be.

    2. Click on New, then click on Shortcut.

    3. Type in an executable name, then click on Next.

    4. Type in the name to appear under the icon, then click on Next.

    5. If the executable does not come with an icon, you will need to select an icon from those displayed, then click on Finish.

    6. You’re not done yet. There is now an icon on the screen but you still need to edit the properties to make it behave properly. Right click on the new icon, click on Properties and click on the Program tab.

    7. Most of Touch Menus executables require that the Working directory be the application directory, not the directory containing the executable. If this is the case, type in the full path in Working. Click on Close on exit.

    8. Click on the Screen tab and Click on Full screen.

    9. Click on OK and you should now have a working icon.
    Revisions

    12/12/00 rw

      1.

          Added Shared Global Printer section.
      2.

Document was formerly named Configuring Win95 Systems.  Renamed and revised to reflect it’s use as both a Windows95 and Windows98 document.
